The Diary of a Teenage Girl
reviewed by rock star MIKE PATTON
****four stars out of four
in your February 2003 JANE Magazine

"This graphic novel chronicles the 'golden years' of Minnie Goetze, 15, a San Franciscan experiencing the typical highlights of outsider teenhood–loneliness, confusion, anger, and a dysfunctional family. Minnie finds that her only path to self-discovery is through fucking and getting fucked up. She loses her virginity by seducing her mother's boyfriend, shoots/snorts/smokes/drinks herself into oblivion daily and eventually awakens more or less on her feet–as a lesbian and an outright man-hater. Subject matter aside, the book is effective because the writing is smart and visceral, with a jagged feminist edge; and the comics' homemade design adds to the claustrophobia of the diary. If you find a strange comfort in Crumb or Clowes, peek into this. And the money line is: "Rapes are meant for places like this." Hats off!
