The human male exhibitionist is strikingly like a low-status primate. He does not exhibit to other males. His tendency is to exhibit down the hierarchy to immature females. Anything that tends to increase the subject's power or prestige can be used as a reassurance against anxieties. Very often what triggers the compulsive exhibitionist is not sexual deprivation or the need for sexual contact, but rather, a narcissistic or emotional hurt, a rejection by someone significant, or a failure in a work-related or male role-related achievement. The exhibitionist is unable to exert himself with other men and when his self-esteem is injured or his status threatened, he seems to revert to primitive anthropoid exhibiting behavior.
